What is a beanie? Features, examples of coordination, and recommended items.

Knit hats are a popular winter accessory for men and women of all ages. Fashion lovers have probably heard of “beanies,” a type of knit hat, at least once, but surprisingly few people actually know what they are. In this article, we will introduce the characteristics of “beanies,” examples of coordination, and recommended products.

What is a beanie?

A beanie is a knit hat without a fold, an item that was born in the U.S. in the early 1900s and was called a seamed cap because it was made by sewing four to six felt panels together at the time, and the topmost button on the top of these sewn panels is called a “bean. The top button at the top of these sewn panels resembled a bean, hence the name “beanie. It originated as an item to keep the head warm, but it also has a history of being useful for blue-collar workers to keep their hair in place in the 1950s. It is also well known among fashion lovers that the tamu hat was born because of its popularity with hippies.

Around the 1990s, tam hats became popular not only as an item to keep warm, but also as a fashion item, appearing in a wide range of designs, including those with woven patterns and patches. The peak beanie (visor beanie), which is not often seen today but is characterized by a design that looks like a combination of a beanie and a baseball cap divided by two, was also born around this time.

Wool isn’t the only material used in beanies!

Since it is an item to keep the head warm, it is originally made of wool, but nowadays there are many summer beanies made of linen, cotton, or summer wool with good air permeability. By choosing a beanie made of the appropriate material for the season, you can enjoy it outside of winter as well. Also, the weaving method can greatly affect the breathability and warmth of the beanie, so be sure to check the weaving method carefully when purchasing a beanie.

Season Suitable Materials
Spring Acrylic, Cotton, Cotton Linen
Summer Cotton, cotton linen, summer wool
Autumn Acrylic, cotton, wool
Winter Acrylic, Wool

Beanies and watch caps are two very similar items!

A similar item, the watch cap, is also a knit cap, but it is completely different from a beanie because it has a folded back. The watch cap was originally called a “watch cap” and was created as a working cap for navy sailors. Incidentally, the cap worn by the main character in the movie “LEON” is called an “Islamic watch cap” and is characterized by its short folded back. The name of the hat has been forgotten in recent years, but if you are a fashion lover, it is important to distinguish between the two.

Selected examples of coordination using beanies!

Example of beanie coordination (1) “It’s a fashionable person’s usual way to give a sense of style by matching it with a beautiful coordinate!

The beanie is a casual item, but if you dare to wear it with a more elegant outfit, you can create a stylish atmosphere. In order not to stand out too much, a basic and soothing dark gray color was chosen to harmonize with the adult coordinate, which is also a good combination.

Beanie Coordinates (2) “A beanie with a thick line raises the autumn/winter atmosphere.

The design of the beanie has a slightly thicker line than most beanies, which adds to its autumn/winter feel. The beanie also covers the ears to give the head a clean silhouette and accentuate the stylish beard.

Example of beanie coordination (3): “Choose a design that matches other items to create a sophisticated impression.

The checkered pattern is used to unify everything from the beanie to the coat and tailored jacket, creating a sophisticated coordinated look. The smart-casual atmosphere is not compromised, and a moderate sense of slackness is added to the look.

Example of beanie coordination (4) “The neon color that has a great effect of adding a splash of color will make you look more fashionable!

If you want to use a beanie as an accent to your outfit, we recommend choosing a neon color like this. In winter, when people tend to choose basic colors such as black, gray, and navy, why not try a color that will lift your spirits?

Example of beanie coordination (5) “If you want to accentuate your summer look, wear it shallow.

Nigel Cabon, who is known for his love of hats, uses beanies in his summer outfits to create a street element. While beanie style in summer tends to look hot and gloomy, he has succeeded in creating a youthful and cool look by wearing it shallowly. Another important point that cannot be overlooked is the selection of colonial colors to match the color of the clothes and shoes.
