What is DENTS?
DENTS” is a long-established British luxury glove manufacturer established in 1777. The company specializes in manufacturing leather gloves, and its main products made from peccary, a mammal similar to the boar pig, have been popular for many years. The company also offers a number of other collections with excellent fit using high-quality materials such as North American deer (deer) and Egyptian hair sheep (sheep). The brand is actively expanding not only in the U.K. but also globally, and is recognized worldwide as a masterpiece of leather gloves.
Dents’ fit has been known as the ” secret fit ” since its inception.
Dent’s was founded in 1777 in the English city of Worcester. The company was founded in 1777 in Worcester, England, when the founder, John Dent, cut a pair of gloves. A prodigy in the art of leather identification and cutting, Dent’s gloves were “so comfortable to wear that you forget you are wearing them. The gloves are called “Secret Fit” for their superb fit, and the prestigious leather glove brand has gained fame since its establishment.

Dent’s early foray into the international market
After John Dent retired, his sons, John Dent, Jr. and William Dent, continued the steady growth of Dent’s. By 1833, the company had successfully expanded to 133 craftsmen in its Worcester and London factories. As a major exporter of fine gloves and accessories in the 19th and 20th centuries, they sold to the most exclusive stores in New York, Paris, Grenoble, Brussels, Leipzig, Prague, Sydney, Naples, and elsewhere. The company expanded globally from an early stage, targeting fashion-conscious ladies and gentlemen, for whom wearing gloves to any social occasion was a kind of status symbol.
Used by Queen Elizabeth at her coronation, with a ” Royal Warrant
In 1897, the company created a special glove to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Also, in 1953, Dents’ gloves were chosen by Queen Elizabeth II as her coronation gloves. Like other venerable British manufacturers, Dentz gloves, which have been used by the royal family, are awarded the title of Royal Warrant, a sign of the highest quality.
The royal family’s use of DENZ gloves was not limited to England; Napoleon Bonaparte’s first wife, the Empress of France, Josephine de Boerne, also used DENZ gloves. A museum has been built at the current Dentz headquarters factory in Warminster, Wiltshire, where these legendary collections are on display.
Training glove cutters to inherit Dents’ technical skills
More than 230 years after its founding, the reason why Dents gloves continue to maintain the quality that has earned them the sobriquet “secret fit” is due to the training of cutters. In the early days, to become a skilled glove cutter at Dentz, a master cutter usually required seven years of apprenticeship under a master cutter. John Dent’s two sons were also apprenticed for seven years from the age of 15. Today, the length of the apprenticeship itself is a little shorter, but there are still many years of experience and a long period of training required to become a qualified cutter. With their sharp eyes and dexterous hands, these craftsmen are the ones who make Dents gloves.
Leather materials used for Dents gloves
The leather used to make DENZ gloves is rigorously selected by DENZ’s skilled leather buyers and sorters. Natural leather can become completely unusable due to subtle changes and shading, not to mention scratches. The sorters use their experienced eyes to identify the texture, feel, thickness, and strength of all types of leather. This technique, which can never be done by machine, is what gives DENZ gloves their fine texture.
Peccary
Peccary is a high-end leather that is representative of Dents with its soft hand. Peccary is a boar pig-like mammal that lives in the tropical rainforests of South America. It is characterized by its thick yet flexible fiber structure with three interconnected bristle scar pores on its silver surface. Water is the enemy of ordinary leather, but peccary is resistant to water stains and does not harden easily. In order to produce a glove with a uniform grain, Dentz is committed to making a pair from the leather of a single peccary. The beautiful luster at the beginning of use is attractive, but the depth of color and smoothness of the fabric change as time goes by, making it a great advantage to enjoy your own unique aging process.
deerskin
Deerskin, made from the finest North American doe, has a smooth, lustrous silvery layer. Not only is it lightweight and durable, but its fine texture makes it moist to the touch. The fine fibers also provide high moisture retention and excellent breathability. Like peccary, it is resistant to water and odors, making it especially useful in humid Japan. Because it boasts outstanding durability among leather materials, it is the most suitable leather for gloves that are used daily during the winter season.
Hair Sheep
Sheepskin is often used in cold-weather clothing because of its many fat holes, which provide insulation and high heat retention when the leather is tanned. Dents’ hair sheep is made of sheepskin from the desert areas around Egypt. It is one of the world’s highest quality leathers produced by the prestigious British company Pittard. The leather is very thin and softly tanned, which makes it smooth and silky to the touch, as if it is absorbed into the skin. The leather is not only comfortable to use, but also looks elegant and can be matched with dressy outfits.
Silk (lining)
The silk used for the lining is the closest material to the skin and provides a sense of oneness as if it is absorbed by the hand. It has antibacterial, odor-absorbing, and ultraviolet rays blocking effects, and can be used in seasons other than midwinter because of its warmth in winter and coolness in summer.
Cashmere (lining)
Cashmere is obtained from goats with very fine and long fibers that inhabit the Kashmir region. Dents uses a cashmere lining custom-made by Johnston’s, a renowned cashmere manufacturer, which is knitted from a rare material that can only be harvested from a single goat weighing only 200 grams, providing a luxurious, enveloping warmth to the hand.
Dents Grove’s attention to detail
Even the best materials can be ruined if the technique is sloppy. The “secret fit,” the most attractive feature of DENZ gloves, is created by the skill and experience of the master cutter ( master cutter ). The patterns used today are inherited from those made in 1939, and adjustments are made according to the natural stretch of the natural side. The gloves are made in 32 different processes, mostly by hand, including the cross-stitching of the fingertips and the three rows of “pointers” that decorate the back of the glove. The gloves are made with the highest quality technology and are said to feel so good that “you can turn the pages of a newspaper with the gloves on.
James Bond in “007” also wears Dents gloves
In “Skyfall (2012)” and “Spectre (2015),” James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, can often be seen wearing black gloves. The gloves used in these two films are Dentz gloves. The gloves were named after the films “Skyfall” and “Spectre,” respectively, and were so popular that they sold out in just three days when they went on sale. Incidentally, Daniel Craig wore hair sheep gloves for both films. After all, sheepskin with a sense of dressiness goes best with a suit style like Bond’s.

Can Dents gloves be used to operate a smartphone while wearing them?
Many people nowadays place an important weight on whether or not they can operate their smartphones while wearing them when choosing gloves. DENZ gloves are now available in models made of hair sheep, suede, and other materials that support touch-screen operation. This is a great example of not only preserving traditional technology, but also responding to the latest needs.
In addition, most smartphone-compatible gloves have special chips embedded in the fingertips or are stitched. However, DENZ’s smartphone-compatible gloves have no such workmanship at all, and despite being all-leather, the fingertips are designed as usual. It is unclear how this was achieved, but it allows the gloves to be used without any discomfort in terms of appearance or fit.
Here are some styles wearing Dents!
The royal black hair sheep model can be worn with any style. The warm-colored scarf and the shirt peeking out from the coat balance out the heavy winter look.
The yellow gloves are the perfect accent. Peccary leather with a slightly grainy feel is an excellent match for thicker coats such as flannel and tweed.
Hand-knit on the back side of the hand, these leather gloves are warm to the touch and visually appealing. This casual-like glove is a useful option when you want to dress down.
