250 Years of BIRKENSTOCK History
Birkenstock has a long history as a shoe brand, with a history of more than 250 years that is unparalleled in the world. The company’s origins date back to 1774 when Johann Adam Birkenstock was registered as a “subject shoemaker” in the church archives of the city of Langen Bergheim in the state of Hesse, Germany.
The second oldest remaining documented history is that of Konrad Birkenstock, grandson of Johann, the founder and holder of one of Germany’s national qualifications, ” Schumeister,” who opened two shoe stores in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1896. He began manufacturing and selling the world’s first flexible footbeds (insoles), which became the forerunner of today’s ” Birkenstock ” brand and the footbeds that are a major feature of the company’s shoes.
