Birkenstock’s History of Building

Birkenstock is a well-established brand with a history of nearly 250 years, and is one of the oldest shoe manufacturers in the world. 250 years is a long time, and its origins are vague because there are no documents or collections left, but in 1774, Johann Adam Birkenstock ( Adam Birkenstock was registered as a “subject shoemaker” in the church archives of Langen-Bergheim, Hesse, in 1774. However, there is no record of any of the following 122 years in the documents that remain today.

Then, in 1896, Konrad Birkenstock, grandson of the founder Johann and holder of one of Germany’s national certifications, ” Schumeister,” opened two shoe stores in Frankfurt, Germany. He was the first in the world to begin manufacturing and selling flexible footbeds (insoles). This was the forerunner of the current ” Birkenstock ” brand and the footbed that is the most distinctive feature of the company’s shoes.
