Birkenstock Kyouto’s feature (2): “In addition to comfort, the brand’s signature footbed encourages a correct gait.

The most distinctive part of Birkenstock items is the three-dimensional footbed, which is designed to fit the shape of the foot. Even during the wartime of World War II, Birkenstock was engaged in the production of orthopedic shoes for wounded soldiers in field hospitals in Germany. Even after the war ended, sandals made with the flexible footbeds created by Birkenstock became a hot topic among returning soldiers. The company then proceeded to develop a line of sandals that were more functional and comfortable to wear, and introduced the “Madrid,” a one-strap sandal that is still in the lineup today with the same design. As the ergonomic medical sandals of the time, they laid the foundation for the “comfort shoe” genre.

Developed for medical use, Birkenstock footbeds are not only comfortable, but are also known for their good walking performance that fits the foot securely. The footbed allows the foot to sit in the correct position and features a shape that promotes a ” correct gait. The Kyouto can be easily adjusted in whiz (foot width and circumference) with a strap made of hook-and-loop tape, so the synergistic effect with the footbed provides an even better fit.
