The major design points of “Kyouto” are the overlapping layers of leather, which are based on the “collar match” of a kimono, and the strap design, which looks as if it is occupied by an obi belt. These distinctive designs seem to evoke the image and history of the ancient capital of Kyoto. The design base for the upper is the ZURICH, with its distinctive double monk. Many Birkenstock sandals with straps, including the Zurich, are equipped with a buckle for attaching and detaching, but the Kyouto has a Velcro design for easier attachment and removal. Compared to items with conventional buckles, the Kyouto is even simpler to adjust in size, making it a model with an approach to fit that caters to a wide range of generations and demographics.

Another secret of their popularity is that in addition to the standard type that uses the same material for the upper and strap, the lineup includes a variety of variations such as a bi-color type that uses different materials, making the most of the kimono inspired design.
