This is the fifth model in the Air Jordan series released around February 1990. The Air Jordan 4 gained worldwide popularity, and this next model gained a greater response than previous Jordan fans and sneaker enthusiasts had expected. Its popularity was so great that there were even murders over the sneaker. Incidentally, the Air Jordan 5 was also the favorite basketball shoe of Kaede Nagarekawa, a popular character in Slam Dunk.

The design was based on the “Mustang Fireplane,” or ” P-51,” a fighter plane that was active in World War II. The tip of the shoe is finished to resemble the nose art of a fighter plane. The jagged pattern on the side midsole is reminiscent of shark teeth on the Mustang. The impactful shoe tongue design with the Jumpman logo boldly placed is also cool. The AIRJORDAN tag on the back of the tongue was sewn on upside down, as the shoe was designed to be worn with the tongue turned inside out. Because of the innovative design, the catch phrase “Is it the shoes? was used in a commercial by Spike Lee.
