Fred Perry Polo Shirt’s Characteristic 2: “Involvement with mods, the youth culture of England


In the 1960s, Fred Perry polo shirts became a fashion item, and this was due in part to the Mods craze that swept through the youth of the British working class at the same time. The background of this trend is closely related to the Mods boom that was taking place around the same time, mainly among young British working class people. Mods” refers to a movement in music, such as ska and R&B, and their fashion that was popular among young people in England from the late 1950s to the 1960s. While formal, traditional British clothing had been the mainstream up until then, young British people living after World War II began to prefer casual items such as military jackets, jeans, and boots.

The tops they all wore were Fred Perry’s famous M12 polo shirts. At a time when it was still rare to wear sportswear on the street, Fred Perry polo shirts were accepted as street wear and became a symbol of mod culture. Artists who led the music scene at the time, such as Paul Weller and Morrissey of The Smiths, also loved wearing the M12.

Even today, leading British artists such as Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Liam Gallagher of Oasis, and Damon Albarn of Blur often wear Fred Perry polo shirts. Also, in the 1979 film ‘ Farewell, Light of Youth,’ which was set in the mod culture of the time, Jimmy Cooper, the main character played by Phil Daniels, wore an M12.
