What is an Ulster Coat?
The Ulster coat was introduced in the late 1860s and is said to be the original overcoat. At a glance, it resembles a double chester coat, but it is characterized by a wide upper ulster collar and is basically double-breasted with a back belt or waist belt. The name comes from the coat made of thick wool from the northeastern region of Ulster Island in Northern Ireland. Compared to the Chesterfield coat, which has a dressier feel, this coat has a slightly sportier impression. A typical item that uses the Ulster collar is the ” polo coat.
