If you think that parasols are used by women and beauty guys who don’t want to get sunburned, please let go of that preconception about sweaty people. I would like you to throw that preconception out of the window. Parasols are effective in preventing sunburn, of course, but they also reduce the heat index by blocking direct sunlight and also suppress perspiration*, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of the Environment. In my own experience, I have found that wearing a parasol keeps me cool and prevents me from sweating. Incidentally, I walk around the Jingumae area with a parasol on my way to work in the summer, and surprisingly, I have not been looked at strangely at all. I hope my fellow sweaty people will use parasols without any shame. I personally recommend using a rain or shine umbrella, as it can cope with the guerrilla downpour that has become a typical summer event in Japan.

Cooling the back of the neck, under the armpits, behind the knees, wrists, and other places where arteries run can reduce sweating quite effectively. In my case, I sometimes put coolant between both sides of my body before going out. Miniature refrigerants like the ones shown in the image below, which you can get when you buy fresh food at supermarkets and department stores, are very useful, and I always keep them stocked in my refrigerator. I also like the fact that I can throw them in the trash if they get in the way when I am on the road.
A friend who works in the field taught me about using cooling sprays. The following sprays are for sports sprains, so I basically don’t recommend using them for any other purpose, but in my case I use them to cool my body. The cooling effect is outstanding, and a quick spray over the entire body will make you feel chilly, and the sweat will subside at once. I recommend spraying it on a towel or handkerchief and then applying the cooled towel to the skin, rather than spraying it directly on the skin. Prolonged direct spraying on the skin may cause frostbite or low-temperature burns, so please be very careful.
