Gurkha sandals are sandals that feature a woven leather strap upper and a toe/kakato covering. They originated with Nepalese Gurkha soldiers who engaged the British East India Company in the 19th century. After fighting against the British in the Anglo-Nepalese War, they were highly regarded for their bravery, and were an elite unit that was incorporated into the British East India Company’s army. At the time, they operated in the hot and humid environment of South Asia and required equipment that was breathable and easy to move around in. One type of equipment that emerged from this practicality was the Gurkha sandal and Gurkha pants, which are now loved as fashion items.
Today, Gurkha sandals have their origins in military-derived practical shoes, and are interpreted by both leather and luxury brands. They are one of the staple summer shoes with both rugged roots and the elegance of leather shoes.
