New Balance sneakers are divided into the so-called “inexpensive line” for the masses and the “expensive line” for the more serious. The difference in price range comes from the place of production and the manufacturing process. Those mass-produced in Asian countries such as China and Vietnam are sold as the inexpensive line, while those made by hand by craftsmen in factories in the U.S. and U.K. are sold as the expensive line. Some models are manufactured both inexpensively and expensively, but all M1400s are made in the United States. Only the highest quality models exist.

The materials used, as well as the stitching and other details, are of a high level. Of particular note is the stitching inside the upper, which uses a technique called the ” bag Mackay method (bag stitching method). As can be seen by peeling off the insole and looking at the inside of the shoe, the upper and sole of a typical sneaker are sewn together along the outer circumference of the shoe. In contrast, the M1400’s upper and sole are sewn together right in the middle. By literally sewing them together like a bag, the sneaker wraps around the foot as the wearer wears it, creating a superb fit. The Mackay method is an advanced technique used for high-end Italian-made loafers. Only a few models of New Balance also use this method.

The material around the cuff and the lining of the shoe tongue is thicker than that used in less expensive models. The combination of the soft, cushioned material and the Mackay manufacturing method provides excellent support.
