Tires, the raw material for EcoAlp’s sandals, are expensive to dispose of and are often buried in landfills or dumped at the bottom of the ocean, creating a serious environmental problem. In addition, discarded tires are one of the most difficult wastes to sort and recycle because they contain many impurities such as metals. ECOALF, a Spanish company, spent two years developing a technology to remove such impurities from discarded tires. Powdered waste tires are processed by heat, without using crimping materials, and recycled as a material for flip-flops.
