The Art of Layering Around the Neck: Shu-Ha-Ri. A Three-Step Guide to Enjoying Combinations, from Basics to Advanced Techniques

The Art of Layering Around the Neck: Shu-Ha-Ri. A Three-Step Guide to Enjoying Combinations, from Basics to Advanced Techniques

The neckline has a greater impact on your overall look than you might imagine. Even if you’re just letting a T-shirt peek out, the way it looks changes depending on the shape of the neckline, how open it is, and the color contrast—and adding a necklace opens up even more styling possibilities. That said, adding too many elements from the start can make your look appear disjointed. So in this article, drawing on the “Shu-Ha-Ri” philosophy, we’ll share ideas for enjoying neckline layering without relying solely on intuition.

The 'Shu' of Neckline LayeringShawl Collar and Crew Neck: Start by Neatly Layering the Two Silhouettes

As a basic neckline layering technique, the first combination to try is placing a crew-neck top underneath an open outer layer. This time, I paired a charcoal gray shawl-collar cardigan with a white crew-neck T-shirt. The T-shirt’s rounded neckline fits neatly inside the large V-shape created by the thick shawl collar, creating a clear two-layer structure around the neck. The contrast between white and dark gray is striking; while the layered look is immediately apparent, the overall impression remains clean and understated. It’s less formal than a tailored jacket yet looks more polished than a regular cardigan, making it easy to incorporate into weekend meals or any occasion where you want to dress with a touch of sophistication.

Creating a 'Protective' NecklineBecause the combination is simple, pay close attention to the neckline and the texture of the fabric

At this stage, the focus should be on making the silhouette created by the two garments look clean, rather than adding anything extra. The thick shawl collar falls gently from the neck to the chest, creating a deep V-shape, while the texture of the knit creates subtle shadows depending on how the light hits it.Wearing a smooth, crew-neck T-shirt made from high-quality cotton underneath creates a sharp contrast between the soft contours of the knit and the neat curves of the T-shirt, highlighting the distinct textures of the two fabrics. With “Mori,” we want to fully enjoy the neckline design and the natural character of the materials themselves, without relying on embellishments.

The 'Break' in Neckline LayeringDeliberately Misaligning Necklines to Create Space Around the Neck

Once you’ve mastered the basics, the next step is to slightly subvert the idea of neatly aligning necklines.Unbutton the navy henley-neck sweater and layer a beige T-shirt with a wide neckline underneath. By slightly offsetting the different contours—the deep V-neck on the outside, the gentle curve of the inner layer, and the skin peeking through—you create a sense of space and depth that wasn’t present in the “Harmony” approach.Rather than making the layers look orderly, the “Ha” philosophy involves deliberately shifting the outlines to achieve overall balance.

Consider 'Breaking the Mold' Even When It Comes to JewelryTake Your Outfit Beyond Layering with Jewelry That Combines Materials with Distinct Shimmers

Once you’ve created some breathing room around your neckline, the next thing to consider isn’t adding color, but how to layer different textures. The BOUCHERON “Quatre Double White” pendant I’ve paired with this outfit combines white gold, white ceramic, and pavé diamonds—each material offering a distinct brilliance.By introducing a white-based, rigid motif against the soft neckline created by the beige inner layer and bare skin, the look becomes more expressive without adding more colors. Rather than creating contrast through color, I layer matte, mirror-like, and gemstone sparkles within the same color family.Going beyond simply layering clothing to incorporate layers in the appearance of materials is the true essence of ‘Ha.’

'Separation' Through Neckline LayeringLayering Henley Tops to Repeat the Same Design

Finally, let’s venture even further away from the conventional theory of combining different necklines. Underneath the black Henley-neck knit, I chose a white Henley-neck T-shirt.By deliberately layering these two pieces—which share the same placket and buttons—the black placket on the outside and the white placket peeking out from beneath create a continuous sequence of similar shapes that shift slightly in position. While this combination might normally feel overwhelming, limiting the color palette to monochrome allows each structure to stand out clearly, as if neatly organized.Layering identical pieces doesn’t result in monotony; instead, differences in fabric, color, and how the garments open create a sense of rhythm. This is an “eternal distance” approach—reimagining neckline layering, which began by adhering to basic forms, according to my own set of rules.

Layering large and small pieces of jewelry with the same design adds another rhythm to the repetition

The jewelry was also put together using the same concept as the clothing. The pieces paired here are pendants from Boucheron’s “Quatre Noir” collection in different sizes. While both feature the same Quatre Noir design—composed of white gold, black PVD, and diamonds—they differ in the size of the motif and the length of the chain. When the 50-cm large pendant and the 45-cm small pendant are layered, the same graphic motif repeats in varying sizes at the neckline, creating a cohesive composition that is more unified than if the two were worn as separate pieces.Furthermore, since the outfit features a double henley neck, the repetition of buttons, the placket, and the “Quatre” motif continues seamlessly from the neckline to the chest. While coordinating the same design, I slightly vary the size, length, and materials. Creating order while adding elements is the neckline layering look I aim to achieve through the concept of “separation.”
