The Fun and Fascinating History of the White T-ShirtOriginally underwear for U.S. Marines, how did the T-shirt come to be loved by Hollywood stars and evolve into a fashion staple?
The white T-shirt originated when a one-piece undergarment worn in 19th-century Europe was split into a top and bottom. This simple, comfortable garment—with no buttons or collar—was named the “T-shirt” because its shape resembled the letter “T.”In 1913, the U.S. Navy officially adopted a white, short-sleeved, crew-neck cotton shirt as underwear for its soldiers. After the war, as veterans returned to their homes and workplaces still wearing T-shirts, the garment gradually became part of everyday civilian life.

In the 1920s, companies like Hanes began mass-producing them, and by the 1930s and 1940s, they were featured in Sears catalogs and became widely recognized as “men’s underwear.” In other words, the white T-shirt was originally “underwear that was not meant to be seen.”
