What is the British-born shoe manufacturer ” Dr. Martens”?
Dr. Martens” has established its own style through deep involvement with British subcultures, including the punk and rock music scenes. Although the brand itself was founded in the U.K., its origins lie in Munich, Germany. A German soldier, Klaus Martens, injured his own foot and created a prototype shoe using parts that were left over after the war. Together with his friend Herbert Hunk, who had a knowledge of mechanical engineering, they began producing their own shoes, which was the birth of Dr. Martens. Their shoes with innovative soles caught the attention of the Griggs family, who ran a long-established shoe company in England, and the “1460,” or “8-hole,” with its eight eyelets, was born in 1960. Currently, the brand is supported by a variety of customers for its unique style that sets it apart from other brands, while offering a lineup of many models based on standard models and in line with trends.

Dr. Martens’ classic and best-selling model is the “1460,” with its row of eight eyelets, but the brand also has many other masterpieces. The “10-hole” boot, the theme item of this issue, was created in 1973, 13 years after the birth of the 8-hole, and like the 8-hole, was developed as a work boot, but the “Skins,” a subcultural group of the British working class who liked to wear the “1460,” took notice of it and it became a symbol of rebellious spirit. The 10-hole model features a longer leg than the 8-hole model, giving it a strong presence underfoot. The 10-hole was a classic that caught the attention of the Skins and later the punk and gothic rock music scenes.

Characteristics of Dr. Martens 10-hole: 1) “Ten massive eyelets”
The most distinctive feature of Dr. Martens’ items called “10-hole” is the 10 eyelets (shoe holes). Compared to the 8-hole model used in the standard “1460” model, there are two more eyelets, and the length is longer for that reason.
