An in-depth look at Dr. Martens' hidden masterpiece, the "10-hole boot 1490!

In this issue, we focus on the 10-hole boot “1490,” a sibling of Dr. Martens’ classic 8-hole, and introduce the history of its birth, the characteristics of the item, and the story behind it!

What is the British-born shoe manufacturer ” Dr. Martens”?

Dr. Martens” has established its own style through deep involvement with British subcultures, including the punk and rock music scenes. Although the brand itself was founded in the U.K., its origins lie in Munich, Germany. A German soldier, Klaus Martens, injured his own foot and created a prototype shoe using parts that were left over after the war. Together with his friend Herbert Hunk, who had a knowledge of mechanical engineering, they began producing their own shoes, which was the birth of Dr. Martens. Their shoes with innovative soles caught the attention of the Griggs family, who ran a long-established shoe company in England, and the “1460,” or “8-hole,” with its eight eyelets, was born in 1960. Currently, the brand is supported by a variety of customers for its unique style that sets it apart from other brands, while offering a lineup of many models based on standard models and in line with trends.

A sibling of the 8-hole boot. Dr. Martens’ 10-hole boot “1490

Dr. Martens’ classic and best-selling model is the “1460,” with its row of eight eyelets, but the brand also has many other masterpieces. The “10-hole” boot, the theme item of this issue, was created in 1973, 13 years after the birth of the 8-hole, and like the 8-hole, was developed as a work boot, but the “Skins,” a subcultural group of the British working class who liked to wear the “1460,” took notice of it and it became a symbol of rebellious spirit. The 10-hole model features a longer leg than the 8-hole model, giving it a strong presence underfoot. The 10-hole was a classic that caught the attention of the Skins and later the punk and gothic rock music scenes.

Five characteristics of Dr. Martens’ 10-hole boot “1490”

Characteristics of Dr. Martens 10-hole: 1) “Ten massive eyelets”

The most distinctive feature of Dr. Martens’ items called “10-hole” is the 10 eyelets (shoe holes). Compared to the 8-hole model used in the standard “1460” model, there are two more eyelets, and the length is longer for that reason. Depending on the height of the wearer, the length reaches the calf, giving the shoes a strong presence and making them useful as a point of reference in a coordinated look. Depending on the tightness of the laces, the look of the shoes can be changed, and they can be worn in both stylish and rugged styles.

Characteristic of Dr. Martens 10-holes (2) “Uncut leather that creates a rough atmosphere

While the standard 8-hole has piping sewn all the way around the opening of the footwear, the standard 10-hole is characterized by a cut-out design with no such treatment. This creates a rough atmosphere and at the same time provides a comfortable wearing experience as they do not catch on the feet. The longer length makes for a simpler, more attractive look.

Dr. Martens 10-Hole Feature #3: “Yellow Parts for Corded Accents”

Here, we introduce the iconic detail used in the standard 8-hole and other models. Dr. Martens are characterized by eye-catching yellow parts scattered throughout the shoe. The heel loops at the footwear opening and the welt stitching that frames the foot shape are also finished in yellow. This design was chosen because Martens wanted to create a striking contrast to the first 8-holes. The iconic detail that instantly identifies “Dr. Martens” as “Dr. Martens” – the yellow logo heel loop on a black background and yellow welt stitching – gives the shoe a presence that no other brand has.

Characteristic of Dr. Martens 10-hole shoes (4) “Cushioning that feels like you are walking on air

The outsole is an essential part of Dr. Martens items. It is no exaggeration to say that Dr. Martens was born because Martens created this sole. The sole, named the “Air Cushioned Sole,” provides unprecedented cushioning. The sole has a small grid of spaces that seal in air, providing the wearer with the feeling of walking on air. Since the brand has a strong image in music and fashion, many people do not have an image of wearing these shoes as an everyday enemy, but in fact, they are a comfortable item that can be easily incorporated into everyday coordination.

Characteristic of Dr. Martens 10-hole model 5: “Smooth leather that combines exquisite luster and smoothness

The standard 10-hole model is made of “smooth leather,” a highly durable chrome-tanned cowhide leather. It is characterized by its elegant and exquisite luster and smooth touch, and easily blends in with beautiful styles. Care is the same as for ordinary cowhide leather. After brushing off surface dust, clean the inside of the leather with a leather cleaner suited to the leather. Then, apply a nourishing cream to the entire surface to maintain the beautiful texture of the leather. The leather will become more durable as it is worn in, and will fit your feet well, so you will surely grow attached to it.
