The “Tokyo Neon Collection” was launched in February 2019 as a Japan-only collection inspired by the neon lights that symbolize Tokyo’s nightlife. One of the released models is the Air Max 98 in neon colors. The black-based body, pink midsole, and orange lacing loops are all in neon. The piping that surrounds the shoe 360 degrees and the Swoosh are colored in green to create a cyber feel.

The latest Air Max 98 colorway to be released in July 2019 is a pair that draws on the “90s” fashion trend. In recent years, Nike has been releasing models with colorways inspired by retro windbreakers, and this model is one of them. The familiar layered upper of mesh, suede, and leather is based on black, but in a variety of colors. Stripes of yellow, green, purple, and red, as well as a metallic-colored swoosh, recall the windbreakers that dominated the 1980s and 1990s. The inside of the shoe features a gum-soled Visible Air.

The “Air Max AXIS” is a derivative model that follows the upper design of the Air Max 98.
Inspired by the anomalous design of the Air Max 98, the Air Max Axis was developed in 2018. It incorporates many details of the Air Max 98, such as the curved design and mudguard. Yet the assertiveness is restrained, creating a somewhat subdued impression. The midsole is not a full-length Visible Air, but a Visible Air that surrounds only the heel portion like the Air Max 93. The iconic “AIRMAX” is placed on each hoop through which the laces are threaded.
