Continuation of anything is difficult. People inevitably stop before they see results. Many researchers and practitioners have pointed out that this is not a matter of ability, but simply a matter of ” how we perceive time. When I feel limited in my self-discipline, I tend to rush for ” meaning” and “tangible results. However, following in the footsteps of the men who have paved the way for Japan’s future, one realizes that what they valued was not the “result” itself, but the “discipline of the present moment” that lay ahead of it. At the beginning of a new year, I would like to organize here the “3 preparations for not treating yourself as if you were a mess.

Learning from Shigeaki HinoharaDietary Preparation
In the world of body makeup, it is said that ” Diet is 80% and muscle training is 20%. No matter how much you exercise your body, if your diet is disordered, the desired changes will not come. Conversely, as long as one’s diet is in order, one can maintain an appropriate physique without resorting to hard training. This “inner discipline” was proven by Shigeaki Hinohara, a physician, who remained active until the age of 105.
Mr. Hinohara strictly controlled his daily calorie intake to about 1,300 kcal. In the morning, he would have a glass of juice and a tablespoon of olive oil; at lunchtime, when he was busy, he would have milk and a few cookies (sometimes he could not find time to eat them); and at night, he would eat a mountain of vegetables and a small amount of fish or filet mignon for protein. By sticking to this frugal diet, he maintained his weight in his thirties and a neat physique that always looked good in his crisp, glued lab coats and suits.
Eating well is synonymous with taking care of yourself. It’s daunting to track the numbers six months from now, but I try to carefully choose what I put into my body today, little by little. I want to spend my time believing that this small completion will become a solid foundation that will support me in the future.

Learning from Akio MoritaPhysical conditioning through exercise
Sony co-founder Akio Morita was known for playing tennis every morning, even in the midst of his busy, globe-trotting life. He was always dressed in his white tennis uniform and stood on the court, and exercise must have been his duty to improve “himself as a management resource.
In public, Mr. Morita always wore a sophisticated suit, embodying the Sony brand. His dignified appearance was supported by the self-discipline he exercised on a daily basis. Even if he was not in the mood, he dared to work at a set time without hesitation. This is a defensive measure to free oneself from unnecessary conflicts and to regain a sense of ” being in control of oneself by one’s own will.

Learning from Jiro ShirasuDressing Well
“I’m too old to be fashionable…” The most vivid rejection of the “I’m too old to dress up” attitude is probably that of Jiro Shirasu. He was one of the first to wear Levi’s 501s in his 40s shortly after the war, and he wore white T-shirts and suits tailored in Savile Row, London, with ease. He has never faded away.
For him, dressing well was not just a matter of fashion, but an expression of his “principles. Caring for one’s surroundings and knowing what looks good on oneself is a way of continuing to respect oneself as a person. The dignity that remains after youth has settled down is the history of how a person has treated himself or herself. As if to say to yourself in the mirror, ” I haven’t given up on you yet,” take care of your daily attire and continue a quiet dialogue with yourself.

Tadashi Yanai's 'One Win, Nine Losses' PerspectiveAccepting Setbacks Sometimes to Keep Getting Better
Fast Retailing’s Tadashi Yanai described his own progress as “one win, nine losses.” He believes that when taking on something, it is rather natural that things do not go as planned.
There may be times when you want to throw it all away with one slipup. But even though he is in the midst of nine losses, he will again prepare his meals, move his body, choose his clothes, and look forward to the next day. Such “resilience” is the kindness that will keep you from destroying yourself.

To be able to take the option of ” continuity ” in all aspects of life
The common thread that runs through all of these individuals is that they treat hard work not only as a prerequisite for success, but also as a ” prerequisite ” for maintaining a sense of self. They are self-disciplined and keep their diet, their bodies, and their outfits in shape. This is not something you can do because you are always in a good mood. It is a matter of gently anchoring the attitude of ” don’t treat yourself like crap ” in one’s daily life. If you continue to treat yourself with care without disrupting your life, your appearance is sincere and valuable enough on its own.
