Perspective to refer to when choosing a T-shirt (2) “Material determines 80% of a T-shirt!

Because T-shirts are made up of simple parts, pay attention to the material. If you want to wear it hard, choose a thick, dense fabric. If you want to look elegant, choose a fabric with thin fibers and a smooth luster, and so on.

Here are the three main factors that determine the best T-shirt fabric for you!

Element 1: “Material.

The following materials are commonly used in men’s T-shirts. Each has its own characteristics, so here are some simple points to keep in mind. In addition to pure compositions such as the authentic 100% cotton, various fabrics are developed by mixing (blending) each material to gain both advantages and cancel out the disadvantages of each material, so please take a look at them for reference.

Cotton
is the most orthodox fabric for T-shirts. Its soft touch with excellent moisture absorbency is a major feature. Quality varies greatly depending on the producing area and manufacturer. Those with brand names on the material itself, such as Sea Island Cotton, Supima Cotton, and Subin Platinum Cotton, are often higher priced because of their high quality and smooth texture.

Polyester
is a material that is generally available at low cost, so it has a strong image of being used in many inexpensive products. However, nowadays, there are many maison brands that dare to use polyester to provide functions such as quick-drying, deodorant, and fastness, which are difficult to achieve with natural materials. The multifunctional Solotex® is also made of polyester.

Polyurethane
is a rubber material often used to add elasticity to fabrics. It is often used in tight silhouette T-shirts and active sports T-shirts because it creates a soft texture and allows for a stress-free fit even in fitted sizes. Another advantage is that it has good kickback even when stretched and does not easily lose its shape. The disadvantage is aging due to hydrolysis, but since this is often the case after more than a decade of use, it should not be considered that much of a problem if worn for a few years.

Silk
produces a delicate, lustrous sheen to the fabric, giving it an easily recognizable, luxurious look. The smooth, beautiful drape created by softly reflecting light is ideal for creating a sense of class and elegance. Although expensive, it is difficult to care for, so it has a strong image of being a rather luxurious material. In recent years, T-shirts that mix silk with other materials to add a slightly luxurious feel while maintaining durability are also being developed.

Wool
Wool has been used with increasing frequency over the past few years. Although wool is a natural fiber, it is beginning to attract attention as an innerwear material for sportswear due to its superior moisture absorption and desorption properties. As used for suits and jackets, many wool T-shirts have a somewhat classic and elegant look.

Linen
The oldest fiber known to mankind, ” linen ” has been used for about 8,000 years and is a staple material for summer. It has excellent strength and is known as a precious luxury material that cannot be harvested on site for five to seven years once it has been harvested. It is characterized by its unique dry touch that gives it a cool and refreshing feel, and when used as a T-shirt fabric, it produces a unique wooden texture that is different from other textures.

Element (2) “Thread thickness

The thickness of the yarn, known as the yarn count, is also important. Basically, fabrics are made by knitting threads, so the thickness of the thread has a large impact on the texture of the fabric. What we want to pay attention to are yarn count and twist. The yarn count is indicated by a number, and the higher the number, the finer and finer the yarn. Twisting is like twisting a thread. The stronger the twist of the yarn, the drier the touch, and the weaker the twist, the softer and fluffier. In some cases, multiple strands are twisted into a single strand, in which case it is called 2-strand twist or 3-strand twist.

Element 3: “Knitting method

The difference in the weave structure of the fabric is another easily recognizable factor that changes the impression of the fabric. The orthodox knitting method for T-shirts is called jersey knitting. The orthodox knitting method for T-shirts is called jersey knitting, which is used for T-shirts of all tastes because it is a simple flat-knit material.
