Sukajans have a masculine, badass appearance and appealing atmosphere. While there are some core enthusiasts who even keep a collection of Sukajans, nowadays Sukajans are gaining recognition as a fashion item and are loved by a wide range of people. What is a Sukajan in the first place?

Sukajan is a jacket of Japanese origin made of rayon, acetate, or other shiny synthetic fiber fabric and decorated with large, gaudy embroidery on the front chest area and back. It has a ribbed collar, hem, and sleeves, and is similar in shape to a stadium jacket, but a Sukajan is basically a jacket with raglan sleeves for ease of movement, and is often reversible. Sukajans were born after World War II. It was first made as an embroidered arrangement on jackets worn by American soldiers stationed in the Yokosuka area as part of the Allied forces occupying Japan. Since it was made as a souvenir for them, it is also called a “souvenir jacket” in English. Incidentally, there are two theories on the origin of the Skajan: one says it stands for Yokosuka jumper, and the other says it stands for sky dragon jumper, as it was often embroidered with sky dragons.

Such skajumpers came into the limelight in the spring/summer of 2016. Until then, normcore and natural clothing had been the trend, but as a reaction to this return to basics, the skajan, with its outlaw appearance and flamboyant design, leaped into the limelight as a trendy item. The ska-janes swept the runways of famous brands such as Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Dries Van Noten, and became a fashion item that permeated the world. The traditional image of “men’s wear” was dispelled, and they came to be enjoyed as women’s wear as well. Even now, some brands release new items during the spring and summer seasons, making it a must-see item.
