What is Onitsuka Tiger?
Oni to tora.” The sneaker brand with such a fearless name was born in 1949, shortly after the end of World War II, when Japan was still under GHQ rule. It began as a sports shoe manufacturer established in Kobe by Kihachiro Onizuka. Since its establishment, the company has expanded its sales of various sports shoes, including running shoes, after having started to work on basketball shoes. During the production of these first basketball shoes, the president of the factory that was contracted to manufacture them stylishly put a tiger mark on the soles of the shoes, which was the origin of the brand name.
Mr. Onizuka, the founder of the company, came up with the idea that the “tiger,” the strongest animal in Asia, and his own name, “Oni,” when multiplied together, would evoke an extraordinary creature, and the brand “Onitsuka Tiger” was born. The momentum of this idea was linked to reality, and athletes wearing Onitsuka Tiger shoes, which grew to include shoes for Japan’s Olympic team, achieved successes such as winning Olympic medals one after another. The influence of Onitsuka Tiger’s successes helped to solidify its position as a “Japanese brand” recognized around the world.
