Introducing Gucci's recommended loafers! Look out for iconic details like the horsebit and GG logo!

Along with coin loafers and tasseled loafers, bit loafers are among the most popular choices for loafers. The mainstream of bit loafers is the luxury brand “Gucci”. Loafers with symbolic details such as the horsebit and the GG mark have a different presence from ordinary loafers. In this issue, we focus on Gucci’s loafers and introduce recommended models!

Gucci (GUCCI), a global luxury brand and pioneer of bit loafers

Gucci, a well-known global luxury brand, was founded in 1921. The founder, Guccio Gucci, opened a leather goods store in Florence, including harnesses. Leading fashion figures such as Tom Ford and Frida Giannini have served as successive designers, and in 2015, Alessandro Michele was appointed Creative Director. With innovative designs that renewed Gucci’s brand image, he established a firm position as a luxury brand.

Gucci was the first brand in the world to release bit loafers. Bit loafers with metal parts on the saddle are officially called horsebit loafers. The horsebit was inspired by the world of horse riding. The design reflects the trend in Florence’s aristocratic society of the time, and is unique to Gucci, which was originally founded as a harness manufacturer. The horsebit was first worn on tan leather ladies’ bags in the early 1950s, but the original and elegant design of the horsebit quickly became popular. In 1953, the horsebit loafer was introduced on men’s loafers, and the horsebit loafer was born.

Until then, most loafers were coin loafers with a slit in the saddle. They were explosively popular among Ivy League students and others, and were becoming increasingly perceived as “an item for the young. Under such circumstances, the horsebit loafer, with a refinement not found in coin loafers, established its position as a loafer suitable for adults. From the 1970s to the 1980s, the horsebit loafer was especially popular among American executives and businessmen. The style of wearing bit loafers with soft suits became so popular that it was even dubbed ” the uniform of Wall Street. In 1985, they were added to the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States.

The birth of GG canvas can be traced back to the resource shortage during World War II. Gucci had originally operated as a high-end leather goods store, but when leather became a controlled military item and could no longer be used freely, the company invented bags made of materials other than leather. The diamond pattern of small diamonds intersecting each other in a series was Gucci’s first signature “Diamante” bag. Later, in the 1960s, the second generation, Aldo Gucci, combined the double G with the diamante to create the GG canvas. By adopting the most historic signature pattern into a loafer with a contemporary design, the upper is a symbol of Gucci’s innovation.
