What is Tudor’s iconic series ” Black Bay

The latest addition to Tudor’s iconic series, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze Boutique Edition, features the “snowflake” hour hand design of the model introduced in the 1969 catalog. The ever-changing bronze case is as “fun to grow” as a pair of jeans

The most distinctive feature of the new Black Bay Fifty-Eight is its bronze case, inspired by historical ship and diving equipment. And it is the 39mm case size that adopts the iconic proportions found in Tudor diver’s watches of the late 1950s, particularly the legendary Ref. 7924 (aka “Big Crown”), Tudor’s first 200m water-resistant watch.

The high-quality alloy of aluminum and bronze used in this watch is a truly ” living ” material, once used in naval shipbuilding engineering for propellers and other parts requiring high corrosion resistance. Bronze creates a unique and beautiful patina that is adapted to the wearer’s lifestyle. The entire bronze material of this model is satin-finished for a homogeneous and beautiful aging effect.

Tudor Bronze”, an original alloy created for Tudor

Bronze is an alloy with different properties from stainless steel, and the unique craftsmanship used to process it into a watch case is one-of-a-kind. The “Tudor Bronze,” or bronze-aluminum alloy produced for Tudor, is formed into bars and then cut into slags, or cylinders a few centimeters high. The slugs are then heated to high temperatures, and while still hot, they are subjected to tons of pressure in a friction press and individually stamped. The cylindrical Roman material is thus transformed into the middle case of the watch, albeit rough-hewn.

From this point to the completion of the casing-ready bronze case, there are at least 40 steps. After a series of machining operations, the form is finalized, and the case is then subjected to threading, drilling, and various finishing and polishing operations, both by machine and by craftsman, to produce the gleaming exterior.

Tudor, the master of bronze, has taken on a new challenge: the bronze bracelet.

The “Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze Boutique Edition” is the first bronze watch to be made by Tudor, an experienced bronze watchmaker, and is a new model in which even the bracelet is entirely made of bronze. The satin-finished bracelet, reminiscent of Tudor’s riveted bracelets of the 1950s and 1960s, slowly develops a patina at the same pace as the case. The new clasp, also in satin finish, has a new cover and is equipped with a “T-fit” adjusting system that allows the wearer to adjust its size. The wearer can easily adjust the 8mm length in 5 steps without the need for tools.

Fabric strap included! A more casual way to wear your bronze without compromising the world of bronze.

The fabric strap is indispensable in telling the story of Tudor’s deep relationship with the navy. In the past, Tudor delivered watches to the French Navy without bracelets, and the personnel used handmade straps or other straps that fitted their individual needs. One of Tudor’s diver’s watches in the archives is fitted with a parachute strap made of supple gold thread. This was very practical and was the inspiration for the jacquard woven complementary fabric strap that comes with this ” Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze Boutique Edition.

The appearance is more casual than the all-bronze bracelet. The fabric band is brown-based, which is closer to the bronze, so it can be reimagined without sacrificing the most important feature of this piece.
