What is a cutter shirt?

The term “cutter shirt” is a Japanese word used mainly in western Japan to refer to a shirt. It is the product name of a collared shirt introduced in 1918 by the Japanese sports manufacturer “mizuno,” and is said to have come into wide use mainly in western Japan, as Mizuno’s headquarters were located in the western part of the country. The name was conceived by Mizuno’s founder, Toshihachi Mizuno. He was watching a baseball game and saw the spectators rejoice in the team’s victory, saying, “We won! while watching a baseball game, and thought it would bring him good luck, so he named it.

In some parts of western Japan, however, shirts worn under suits by adults are called “shirts,” while shirts worn under school uniforms by students are called “cutter shirts. There are several theories as to the origin of the name “shirt,” including the mishearing of the English word “white shirt” as “wai-shirt,” the abbreviation for “white shirt,” and the shape of the collar when unbuttoned, which looks like a “Y.” In recent years, cutter shirts are also called “shirts. Nowadays, both cutter shirts and shirts are becoming obsolete, and are often referred to as dress shirts.

A wide spread collar is a collar that opens at 100~140 degrees. It is also called the Windsor collar because it was favored by Lord Windsor of England, who is known to have had a great influence on fashion. Because of the large collar opening, we recommend tying a tie with a Windsor knot or other knot that creates a large knot. The widespread collar can also be worn for any occasion.

Collar Type 4: Button Down

A collar with buttonholes at the end of the collar blades and buttons attached to the body is called a button-down. John Brooks, grandson of the founder of the American men’s clothing brand Brooks Brothers, got the idea for this collar when he watched a polo match in England. With this background, button-down shirts are sometimes called polo collar shirts. Since it is basically a casual standing collar, it is safe to avoid it in limited business situations such as business meetings with clients or meetings with superiors. It will be useful during the Cool Biz period when business casual style is allowed, or for off-duty style.

Collar Type 5: Horizontal/Cutaway Collar

A collar that opens back and forth 180 degrees is called a horizontal collar or cutaway collar. Some brands and manufacturers call a cutaway collar with a collar opening of 190 degrees or more. The collar is characterized by a design that allows the collar tip to flow backward. As with the wide collar, the knot is emphasized, so a Windsor or semi-Windsor knot is recommended when tying a necktie. It is also popular as an off-duty shirt because it looks cool even when worn unbuttoned with no tie.
