Five types of outerwear you should not buy, based on actual experience

Clothing shopping is a volatile process. Even if you feel satisfied and content with your purchase, when you try it on in real life, you may be surprised to find that it does not match your image, or that you find flaws while wearing it. I am the type of person who chooses things rationally, but even so, I have regretted many things after buying them. So this time, based on my own experience, I would like to introduce outerwear that I do not want rational men to choose.

Men who love clothes should be rational in their choices.

I like clothes and have my own style. Many of you may have purchased a piece of clothing in accordance with that style, but found it difficult to handle, surprisingly seldom used, or tired. It is not a matter of poor taste, but rather a lack of “rationality” in the selection process. Rational clothing selection does not mean cutting corners or compromising. Rather, it means choosing clothes that you like so that you can wear them comfortably for as long as possible. What is meant by rationality here is a good balance of ” design, material, use, care, and durability. If any of these elements are significantly lacking, there is a possibility that the wearer will end up not wearing the item, no matter how good looking it is. The following is a summary of such “inefficiencies that men who love clothes tend to fall into.

Outerwear that no rational man should buy 1Coats and jackets made of special materials that require care both when worn and when stored

Clothes that look good but require care and storage each time they are worn often gradually fall out of favor. For example, a rubberized coat is a typical example. This outerwear is made of a material that has a crisp, taut look and a different appeal from cotton gabardine and the like, but in any case, it is distracted by wrinkling. It is not advisable to sit down while wearing a coat, nor to carry a bag on the shoulder for a long time; the inside of the elbow and around the shoulder can get wrinkled due to bending, and it is better to hang the coat in a closet where there is enough space so that the clothes do not get wrinkled by being close together. These wrinkles are difficult to fix with an amateur iron, but there are very few dry cleaners that will accept rubberized outerwear. In addition, the fabric cracks as the elastic deteriorates over time, and the cuffs and hems are easily damaged by friction due to the tension of the elastic. These are all firsthand experiences of the author, with vivid memories of expensive purchases that quickly became scratched and depressing due to the hassle of care. Because of the high degree of difficulty in keeping clothes in a beautiful condition, these are outerwear items that should not be touched if one chooses clothes rationally.

Genuine leather outerwear is another type of outerwear that is difficult to care for. It is a durable material, and you can enjoy the change in wrinkles and color as it ages, but leather is like a living creature, and it is not unusual for the leather to look cloudy or moldy unless you keep it moisturized with cream or expose it to air in a well-ventilated place. Clothing that takes away that feeling of ” being able to wear it easily when you want to ” becomes wardrobe noise in the long run. Taking good care of clothes is one thing, but having to constantly care for them is quite another.

Is wax outerwear surprisingly good if you hold back a little?

Waxed cotton outerwear is often mentioned as a type of outerwear in the same vein that requires care and storage, but I personally view waxed outerwear as outerwear that can be used without care for a long time. It was only when I first bought it that I almost regretted it because of the stickiness of the wax, but as I wore it, the wax drained away and the stickiness became less of an issue, and in fact, the color faded a bit to give it a vintage look and feel. At first I had to put garment covers on them when I put them away in the closet, but now I store them naked in the closet. Wax outerwear lovers will go through many coats of wax with a re-proof, but I think it’s very possible to wear it the way I do.

Outerwear that no rational man should buy 2Over-spec can't be had in city life. Heavy outerwear that makes you sweat even in the middle of winter is a no-no.

Monster parkas developed for U.S. Special Forces operating in extremely cold climates, or mountain shells for serious mountaineering. Of course, they are perfect in terms of cold protection, but there are few opportunities to use such functions in urban life, and “high functionality does not necessarily mean high satisfaction. In fact, it is sometimes inconvenient in daily life, for example, it is too hot to sweat indoors or on trains in midwinter, or the volume of the cotton or down makes it difficult to carry a bag on your back. While it is true that there is “the pleasure of having the real thing,” over-specification is far from rationality. If you are going to purchase such heavy outerwear, you should choose sophisticated urban specs.

3 outerwear a rational man should not buyInsistence is directly related to a lack of flexibility. Outerwear that is limited in where and how it can be worn and matched is difficult to use.

An overly formal double chester coat, a blouson with a strong design quirk, or a brightly colored nylon jacket. At first glance, these items may appear to be the “core” of a style, but in fact, they can be said to limit the range of ways in which an outfit can be worn. For example, “I don’t have the pants to go with this outfit,” or “I don’t have the innerwear to go with this color. As such restrictions pile up, clothes with a low degree of freedom are naturally relegated to the back of the closet. Outerwear that is assertive and has a strong presence can only be used in limited situations. Outerwear that is modest in design but has a sense of presence is the one that shows its true value in everyday life.

4 outerwear that no rational man should buy

Outerwear that can only be worn comfortably in certain seasons, such as thick wool or 100% linen, has a short useful life, even if it looks attractive. Japan’s climate has a large difference in temperature between summer and winter, and in spring and fall, the temperature difference between day and night is extreme. This is why it is ideal to design outerwear that can respond to the “temperature swing” through the use of lining and materials. Coats made of light and breathable wool or water-repellent gabardine are realistic options that can be worn across seasons.

In addition, items that can be converted between spring/fall outerwear and winter outerwear by attaching or removing the liner are very reasonable and superb. For example, a cotton gabardine trench coat with a quilted or wool liner attached is a good example. Since they are often attached only to the body part of the coat, they do not bulk up the body, so they are a smart way to increase warmth and protection from the cold rather than wearing an inner layer.

5 outerwear that no rational man should buy

Oversized, cropped, logoed, or any other outerwear that reflects the year’s trend runs the risk of looking old at the end of the season. Items that reflect iconic trend designs are more memorable, and it is easier to determine when they were in style. The more clothes one likes and buys, the greater the sense of loss if they are no longer worn immediately. On the other hand, outerwear from classic brands whose structure itself is complete will remain in the wardrobe through the ages. The classic item itself may occasionally match a trend and emerge, but it will never look old just because it has passed. Rather than following trends, choosing clothes that can continue to be worn without updating is ultimately the most satisfying.
