Here are some of Eddie’s accomplishments at Dior Homme, Saint Laurent, and Céline, which he led as Creative Director!
2000-2006: Creative Director of Dior HommeIntroduced the then-innovative skinny suit, bringing new customers to Dior as a whole
in 2000. Hedi Slimane became the first Creative Director of Dior Homme in 2000. In his debut collection for the fall/winter 2001 season, Hedi Slimane attracted attention with his extremely slender suits. His slim silhouette and monotone-based worldview were highly acclaimed, and he established the tight silhouette, which was not common in men’s fashion at the time. His signature extreme slim-fitting style is rooted in his boyhood experience of not being able to find clothes that fit his own slender body shape. Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel, fell in love with Eddie’s clothes and lost about 40 kg in order to wear them. The style that Eddie created attracted a new customer base to Dior as a whole, contributing to increased sales, and was a dominant influence in men’s fashion in the early 2000s, driving the brand’s growth and trends.
We would like to introduce his masterpiece for Dior Homme, the “JAKE” skinny jeans featuring extremely tight fitting and three-dimensional processing. These were a big hit when they were released in the 2007 fall/winter season, his last collection. They are made of stretchable material and feature damage processing on the knees and hips, and were continuously developed as a standard item even after his retirement. Other representative pieces include “Ice Blue Silicon Coated Denim,” “Napoleon Jacket,” and “Smoking Jacket. Items from his tenure at Dior Homme are still sold at high prices on the secondary market.
2012-2016: Creative Director of Saint LaurentSales more than double with a strong rock taste!
In 2012, he was appointed Creative Director of Yves Saint Laurent. He changed the brand’s name to ” Saint Laurent Paris “, following the original spelling of the brand’s founding. For fall/winter 2013, he introduced a grunge-inspired style, and despite criticism from existing customers and the media, he pushed forward a rebellious spirit and appeal to a younger demographic. The advertisements included “Saint Laurent Music” and “Saint Laurent Music”. In advertising, he developed campaigns such as the ” Saint Laurent Music Project ” and was also in charge of photography as a photographer. The brand used a wide range of musicians, from young unknowns to legends, to create a unique worldview that crossed the boundaries between music and fashion. These strategies quickly rejuvenated the brand, and sales more than doubled from the pre-inauguration period.
Eddie consistently introduced the slim silhouette at Saint Laurent that he had introduced at Dior Homme, and in addition, he expressed rock style throughout the collection. In addition, the rock style was expressed throughout the collection. The collection was based on the rock style, which was incorporated into luxury fashion and set a new standard for the brand. Many of you may remember the super skinny pants, motorcycle jackets, teddy jackets, and Chelsea boots with their extremely narrow hems.
2018-2024: Creative Director of CélineAppealing mainly to Generation Z, building an image of a cool young brand!
He was appointed Creative Director of Céline in 2018. He revamped the intellectual and minimalist line established by his predecessor Phoebe Philo, removing the accent from the “É” in the brand’s logo and changing it to “CELINE.” The first collection featured rock-inspired skinny suits and mini-dresses, which drew some controversy, but since then, the brand has established an edgy style that combines 1970s bourgeois style with a rock edge. However, the brand has since established an edgier style that combines 1970s bourgeois style with a rock edge. The brand also appealed to a younger demographic centering on Generation Z. Through creations that were said to be conscious of the TikTok generation, the brand’s image was transformed from “an intellectual adult’s hideout” to “a cool brand for sharp young people. The brand’s first men’s-only line, ” Céline Homme ” was launched, and the product category was expanded. Sales doubled, and the brand grew to become the second largest within LVMH after Louis Vuitton and Dior.
At Céline, Eddy inherited the rock taste established at Dior and Saint Laurent, but showed more flexibility and a stance more in tune with the times. Symbolic of this is the ” Elephant Jeans ” that appeared in the 2022 summer collection, a denim with a loose silhouette that reflected the atmosphere of the 90s and drew attention as an item that showed the range of expression of a man for whom a tight fit was synonymous. Signature items included teddy jackets and riders’ jackets, which were also popular at Saint Laurent, and boots with sharp lines. In the bag category, in addition to the new “16” and “C,” the “Trionf,” a reinterpretation of the carriage stop motif from the 1970s, became an iconic piece. The modern sublimation of Céline’s heritage has created a new icon.
Rumors of an appointment to that brand...Where will Hedi Slimane go next?
As of November 2025, Hedi Slimane is on a freelance status. His departure has attracted the interest of fashion insiders around the world, with some speculating that he will be named creative director of Giorgio Armani, a position left vacant by the founder’s passing. In his career as creative director of big maisons such as Dior Homme, Saint Laurent, and Céline, he has always restructured the existing lines of the brands, making significant changes both in terms of sales and influence. At the same time, he has demonstrated his ability to carefully reinterpret each brand’s archives and revive its heritage with a modern sensibility. By balancing tradition and innovation, he has succeeded in attracting a new customer base centering on Generation Z, while at the same time gaining the support of the brand’s existing customers. I personally believe that no matter what brand he joins, his attitude of remaining close to the youth while respecting the history and culture of the brand will surely produce results. We will keep an eye on his future developments.
