Inheriting the experiences and memories of the Great East Japan Earthquake while looking at time and the human life cycleWho is Tatsuo Miyajima, a leading contemporary artist in Japan?

Born in Tokyo in 1957, Miyajima graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1986. Since receiving attention in the Apertoʼ88, the international art exhibition Venice Biennale for young artists, he has continued to work in Japan and abroad as one of Japanʼs leading contemporary artists. He represented Japan at the Venice Biennale (1999). Solo exhibitions include: Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (1990); Hayward Gallery, London (1997); Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (2000); Art Seongjae Museum, Korea (2002); Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome (2004); Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito, Japan (2008), Australian Museum of Contemporary Art (2016), among others. His works are in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the State Museum of Modern Art Munich, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and many public artworks, including the exterior wall of TV Asahi in Roppongi Hills, Benesse Art Site Naoshima, Tokyo Opera City, and the Rheum Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea). Miyajima’s work is represented by digital counters (LEDs) based on three concepts: ” It keeps changing,” ” It relates to everything,” and ” It lasts forever. Each number flickers at a different rate and shows no 0 (zero), suggesting the continuity, eternity, and relationship of time and the human life cycle. He is also known as the initiator of “Reviving Time: The Kaki Tree Project,” in which seeds are extracted from the fruit of persimmon trees that were exposed to radiation in Nagasaki during World War II, and saplings are grown and planted around the world. Currently, he is promoting the “Sea of Time – Tohoku” project to create a new Tohoku by passing on the experiences and memories of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake to the future.
