Why has the Hamilton “Ventura” remained so beloved for so many years?
More than 65 years after its release, Hamilton’s Ventura continues to enjoy unwavering popularity. Although production was once discontinued, it made a comeback and now reigns as a Hamilton icon. So, what is the reason behind the Ventura’s enduring appeal?
The Appeal of the Hamilton “Ventura” (1): “A Striking, Asymmetrical Triangular Design Created by a Genius of Industrial Design”
While the Ventura attracted attention as the world’s first battery-powered wristwatch, its innovative design—featuring an asymmetrical case—is also one of the reasons it has left its mark on watch history. The man behind this design was Richard Arbib, who was hailed as the “genius of industrial design” in the United States at the time. When Hamilton asked him to “design freely without considering practicality,” he reportedly produced hundreds of design sketches, from which an asymmetrical design emerged. That was the sketch drawn in May 1956 and named “VENTURA.”

That striking, asymmetrical design with its triangular form was adopted, and the watch—with a look that seemed to embody the “Mid-Century Modern” style that flourished in the mid-20th century—went into production the following year, in 1957.The dial featured motifs inspired by an oscilloscope—which graphically displays electrical signals—as well as dot indices evoking electrons. It is highly regarded as a watch that has made its mark in history with its one-of-a-kind design.

Hamilton watches embody an American spirit, yet their current production is entrusted to Switzerland, the heartland of watchmaking. Even among models equipped with Swiss-made movements, the Ventura stands out as a staple model priced under 150,000 yen, while high-spec models remain available for just under 300,000 yen, maintaining excellent value for money. While it’s a masterpiece that revolutionized the watch industry, the Ventura’s strength lies in its accessibility—it’s a watch you can own with just a little extra effort—and this is undoubtedly one of the reasons it continues to be loved for so long.
